What Is YWAM New York?
The ministry of YWAM Metro New York began as a special call of God to Nick Savoca in 1981 while he was leading an outreach team in New York City. God spoke clearly that He was calling Nick back to the city of his birth to plant a YWAM urban ministry. For the next five years Nick, Rozanne and their three daughters established a prayer base for this new ministry and arrived in August of 1986 to begin the work. David & Linda Cowie, veteran YWAM leaders, assisted with the pioneering.
In the summer of 1987 a four-week outreach took place in New York city with over 600 participants from 13 different nations of the world. "Operation Liberty" was a great success with many hundreds of people coming to Christ. Approximately 50 New York City churches partnered with YWAM Metro New York in this effort.
A Start in New Jersey In 1989 a wonderful door of opportunity was opened to YWAM Metro NY and we partnered with a local church in Elizabeth, NJ. taking on the challenge of renovating a 9 story hotel and making it the urban hub for our ministry in the metropolitan New York area. For 4 years YWAM Metro NY operated from this hotel. During that period of time we operated 12 training schools, sent 40 Global Outreach Teams to 30 different nations of the world, hosted more than 5,000 short term urban teams in the city and assisted the planting of 10 new churches. The ministry also planted a new YWAM ministry in Kiev, Ukraine sending 13 of YWAM Metro NY's staff to begin the work. Today the work in Ukraine thrives with more than 50 staff. It was YWAM Metro NY's desire that we be able to purchase the Elizabeth hotel but this was not possible and in 1994 the Center was moved back to Long Island where Nick grew up.
A New Focus on Long Island In 1998 YWAM Metro NY, with the special assistance of a generous donor, purchased a church campus on New York Ave in Smithtown, Long Island, NY. Finally, YWAM Metro NY had a home of our own. Much renovation was necessary to the property and its 30,000 square feet of available space. The work is being accomplished for the most part by volunteers who give of their time and expertise to assist in the project.
YWAM Metro NY Today From the Smithtown campus YWAM Metro NY operates a Training & Outreach Center. Discipleship Training Schools, Schools of Biblical Studies Core Course, and Schools of Urban Evangelism. Outreach Teams are sent on a regular basis for ministry in New York City, Long Island, and other parts of the metropolitan New York Area. At the date of this writing more than 60,000 short term urban missionaries have been hosted and mobilized for ministry in the city and its suburbs.
After the disaster of 9/11, YWAM Metro New York conducted a year long special outreach, 6 days a week, in lower Manhattan implementing the Prayer Station Ministry, which was born with YWAM Metro NY originally in 1992. Many thousands of volunteers came from several different nations of the world to assist as the outreach prayed for more than 50,000 people with more than 3,000 coming to Christ.
